How the Waste Management Sector Could Help the Climate Crisis

We all produce waste in our ever day activities, some is unavoidable and needs to be disposed of. Historically waste was simply dumped, burned or buried.

Thankfully we’ve come a long way since then. In the past 30 years alone the waste industry has halved the greenhouse gas emissions linked to its activities. But have we done enough? Even though the waste sector has made such amazing progress it still accounts for 8% of the total greenhouse gas emissions from the UK. With the ever growing evidence of a climate emergency and the Government’s target to reach net zero by 2050, the waste sector has a significant role to play in reducing the UK’s carbon footprint.

Genee can help. Genee, which stands for Greening the Economy of North East England was born out of the North East England Nature Partnership and their inspired climate change action to create genee or Capability North East as it was known. They realised the need for an organisation that could interpret and simplify participation in the climate and biodiversity agendas. We are an environmental sustainability consultancy, created to support organisations of all types and sizes to become ready for a zero-carbon economy. We do this by supporting organisations to reduce their environmental impact and realise the many benefits of integrating sustainability into business practices. As a social enterprise we use post operational profits to fund environmental and social impact.

Jo Holmes, Sustainability Executive has recently joined the genee team. Jo has over 20 years of experience working in the environmental sector and in particular the waste sector. She runs The North East Recycling Forum, which has been active in the North East for over 30 years. Jo said ‘we recognise that waste organisations come in all shapes and sizes and so we have tailored our support to meet the needs of micro businesses to Local Authorities. For organisations looking to attain a nationally recognised accreditation we implement Investors in the Environment. We’d love to assist your organisation in any way we can to facilitate your carbon reduction journey, please get in touch. e:jo@genee.org.uk, w: www.genee.org.uk, t: 0191 5623262
